It\u2019s often performed on both adults and children to save a tooth. Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is an Apicoectomy?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An apicoectomy is a common dental procedure where\u00a0inflamed gum tissue\u00a0and the end of the root of your tooth is removed while the top of your tooth is left in place. It\u2019s often called a root-end resection because it works on the end (or, tip) of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/do-you-have-these-5-bad-dental-habits\">your root<\/a>\u00a0called the apex.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do You Need an Apicoectomy?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your dentist will do a root end surgery for a few reasons. The most common is to try to fix a tooth that\u2019s already had a\u00a0root canal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases,\u00a0root canals\u00a0last a lifetime, but sometimes, the tooth doesn\u2019t heal well and becomes reinfected. Your dentist will use an apicoectomy to remove damaged tissue to save the tooth and avoid\u00a0pulling it out.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Painful Is an Apicoectomy?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A root end surgery causes very little discomfort. It is a\u00a0minor procedure\u00a0done in <a href=\"http:\/\/dentalincbio.com\/es\/\">your dentist\u2019s office<\/a>, and it doesn\u2019t require any general anesthetic. You can usually drive yourself home afterward and go back to your normal activities the next day.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s normal to have some minor bleeding after\u00a0your procedure\u00a0since your gums are cut and stitched, but this should go away after 1 to 2 hours. Rest with your head raised to slow down blood flow and stop bleeding.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can manage pain and inflammation with\u00a0anti-inflammatories\u00a0like ibuprofen. If you have an infection, your dentist might give you antibiotics. Take them as directed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can brush and floss your teeth as normal, but avoid the stitched area. After 24 hours have passed, you can gently rinse your mouth with\u00a0warm salt water. This will help keep the area clean.
